Green Holiday Shopping: Key tip — Shop Local!

by Karin

Mid-November? How did that happen? With the days getting shorter and the holidays at our doorstep, many folks turn to: Shopping! So, let's talk about some ways to make our holiday shopping a little greener!

Tips for more sustainable holiday shopping habits!

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), Americans  spend an average of $997.73 each on gifts over the holidays. How do we green up our holiday shopping?

  1. Shop Local. One easy way to be greener AND support our local economy is to try to spend as much of your holiday budget in local small businesses and stores. (Hint: Small Business Saturday is on 11/26 and is a great way for us to support and celebrate all of our local merchants.)

  2. Plan ahead. Make a list and group your shopping trips. Shop early so you can finish and enjoy the holidays. Plus no regretting that panic gift purchase!

  3. Bring your own bags! This helps reduce single-use plastics AND makes it easier to hide your gifts when you get home!

  4. Give experiences. While these might not be zero waste, they do cut down on stuff in the landfill and may just be a bit more memorable!

  5. Shop your 'gift closet' first. We all have them, the gifts we receive that are just not right for us. Give them a home by finding just the right recipient. You will have saved by not buying something new AND will have cleaned out your closet, simultaneously!

  6. For online shopping, opt for for lower-carbon delivery options. Shop early enough so that you can choose the longer shipping time. Group purchases so they ship together, or order from a local small business and pick it up!

  7. Donate. If your loved one has favorite charity, donate on their behalf. There is even a day to remind you: Giving Tuesday on Nov 29th, right after Cyber Monday. Again, think local! Many local nonprofits need your help.

Do
SHOP - Small Business Saturday - November 26!

Small Business Saturday …

…is on 11/26 but you don't have to wait until then! For every $100 spent at a small business, $67 stays in the community (versus $43 when shopping at a big business). We have so many great local stores in Glen Ellyn so let's show them some love!
Glen Ellyn has some great stores that offer gifts with a sustainable twist. One of our favorites is Re:New, where you will find the most amazing bags, purses and wallets (and more!) made with donated textiles and stitched with love and craftmanship by refugee artisans.
